LID Control Data Fields (SWMM)

New LID control data in SWMM networks is added to database in either the LID control tab of the Subcatchments Grid or by clicking on the button adjacent to the LID controls field in the subcatchment Property Sheet.

The data can, however, only be modified or deleted from the LID control tab in the Subcatchments Grid.

Once defined, a LID control object can be associated with a LID controls structure in a subcatchment.

The following table describes the all data fields which are used to define a LID control object.

Berm height

Storage height.

When confining walls or berms are present this is the maximum depth to which water can pond above the surface of the LID structure before overflow occurs.

For a LID that experience overland flow, it is the height of any surface depression storage.

For swales, it is the height of the trapezoidal cross section, which must be greater than 0.001 mm.

This field is not displayed when the Control type is set to Rain barrel or Rooftop disconnection.

Storage depth

This field is displayed when the Control type is set to Rooftop disconnection.

Vegetation volume fraction

Fraction of the area above the surface that is filled with vegetation.

This field is not displayed when the Control type is set to Rain barrel or Rooftop disconnection.

Surface roughness (Manning’s n)

Manning’s n for overland flow. This surface roughness cannot be 0 for permeable pavements, green roofs or vegetative swales.

This field is not displayed when the Control type is set to Rain barrel.

Surface slope

The gradient of the surface slope.

This field is not displayed when the Control type is set to Rain barrel.

Swale side slope (run/rise)

This field is displayed when the Control type is set to Vegetative swale.

The run/rise (inverse slope) of side walls.

Pavement thickness

This field is displayed when the Control type is set to Permeable pavement.

The thickness of the pavement layer.

Pavement void ratio

Impervious surface fraction

This field is displayed when the Control type is set to Permeable pavement.

Ratio of impervious paver material to total area.

Permeability

This field is displayed when the Control type is set to Permeable pavement.

Permeability of the concrete or asphalt used in continuous systems or hydraulic conductivity of the fill material (gravel or sand) used in modular systems.

Pavement clogging factor

This field is displayed when the Control type is set to Permeable pavement.

Number of pavement layer void volumes of runoff treated it takes to completely clog the pavement.

Regeneration interval

This field is displayed when the Control type is set to Permeable pavement.

The number of days that the pavement layer is allowed to clog before its permeability is restored, usually by vacuuming its surface.

Regeneration fraction

This field is displayed when the Control type is set to Permeable pavement.

The fractional degree to which the pavement's permeability is restored when a Regeneration interval is reached. A value of 0 (default) indicates no regeneration, while a value of 1 indicates complete restoration to the original permeability. Once a regeneration occurs, the pavement begins to clog once again at the rate set in the Pavement clogging factor.

Soil class

This field is only displayed when the Control type is set to Bio-retention cell, Rain garden, Green roof or Permeable pavement.

The class of soil can be selected from a drop-down list.

Soil thickness

Soil porosity

Porosity of the soil. This field is automatically populated when the Soil class is selected.

Conductivity slope

This field is displayed when the Control type is set to Bio-retention cell, Rain garden, Green roof or Permeable pavement.

Slope of the curve of log (conductivity) versus soil moisture content.

Barrel height

Seepage rate

Coefficient for flow in flow units

This field is displayed when the Control type is set to Bio-retention cell, Infiltration trench, Permeable pavement or Rain barrel.

Coefficient C that determines the rate of flow through the underdrain as a function of height of stored water above the drain bottom.

If the layer has no drain, then set Coefficient for flow in flow units to 0.

Warning

The discharge coefficient in ICM can only be specified in flow units, regardless of what type of unit has been set as the default display unit.

Underdrain open depth

The depth at which the underdrain part of the LID control is open.

Underdrain control curve

This field is displayed when the Control type is set to Bio-retention cell, Infiltration trench, Permeable pavement or Rain barrel.

The name of the curve which defines the relationship between the depth and flow factors for this type of LID control.

Any underdrain control curves already defined can be selected from the dropdown list. Alternatively, a new one can be added or an existing one modified using the button located to the left of the field. This displays the non-visual object menu, from which you can select the appropriate option.

Underdrain pollutant removal

This field contains a series of records defining the removal of pollutants which apply to this type of LID control. These are entered on a grid which is displayed by clicking on the button.

The name of the pollutant. The name of a new pollutant can be typed in or an existing one can be selected from a list of defined pollutants.

Note that there must only be one entry per pollutant.
